Remembering Aunt Erna

When we were little kids growing up in Medford on the weekends we would frequently just go (nothing preplanned!) to Aunt Erna & Uncle Chester's, Aunt Elaine & Uncle Freddy's and Aunt Helen & Uncle Victor's. I would have been between 3 and 9 years old.

I loved the spontaneous visits and visitors.  Sometimes nobody would be home and we would have to go home disappointed...

Things I remember about going to Uncle Chester and Aunt Erna's:

~the colored magic rock crystal growing on the a clear bowl on the back of their toilet.

~the marshmallow fluff that was endlessly supplied.  We put it on graham crackers!

~when we left we always received a little baggie of treats for the road.  Usually jolly ranchers...with sticky wrappers!   :)

~Uncle Chester telling stories of the bears in the woods by their house that would come up and eat out of their bird feeders.

~Mom and Dad would sit at the table and talk with Uncle Chester and Aunt Erna and we would read magazines or play with a ice cream bucket full of syringes (unused and clean!).

We loved the visits and that is what makes them so special to us!  We KNEW them, they weren't just relation. In 1986 we moved to Dorchester and they moved to Waupaca in 1994 so our visits stopped...but the memories will always be there!  So thankful for that!!!!

They were definitely one of the sweetest couples I can recall. I will always remember them walking hand-in-hand across the yard at a family reunion. Uncle Chester told me he was great...as long as he had his brides hand. Aunt Erna had the sweetest smile after hearing him say that. Ahhh...what a great example to have.
